Functional Crown Lengthening

Functional crown lengthening is a periodontal surgical procedure to aid in the placement of a crown or restorative dental work when a part of the tooth is broken off at the gum line, decayed, or severely worn. This surgical procedure recontours the gum tissue and supporting bone around a tooth to create an adequate amount of tooth structure exposed for restorative dental work. A new crown can then be properly placed above the gum tissue thereby preventing the new crown from damaging gum tissue and bone. This allows the crown to have a secure attachment to the tooth and be more stable.
